Namibia is vast, diverse and sparsely populated. The distance from the North Eastern corner to the South Western border is the same as the distance from London to Rome in Europe but with a population density of only 1.7 people per square km. This site is designed for foreign paragliding pilots interested in visiting Namibia. The hyper linked "red" dots on the guide map are points of contact. The paragliding community in Namibia is very small and at present there are no schools or clubs who offer full time local guiding or accommodation. However, I am in Namibia and South Africa from November to March. When in Namibia, I am based in Swakopmund. where I have tied up with an Action Adventure company who offer a multitude of affordable activities, guiding, accommodation and general advice. From Cultural Tours to Sky-Diving. It is all there.. . The country is uniquely beautiful and well worth a visit. Please refer to the section on Swakopmund for more details. This site is therefore designed for those who want to visit and are looking for help in planning their trip, information on joining a guided group or simply to find a few contacts as a starting point. I hope that you will find this site useful. If you have any suggestions and comments please feel free to contact me. The web-site is here to help you enjoy Namibia. Fly Safe |
There are approximately 20 flying sites in the country ranging from dune soaring to strong desert XC. 20 odd paragliding pilots make up the Namibian paragliding community. Flyers are mainly concentrated in Windhoek, the capital and Swakopmund, a coastal adventure paradise. The flyers are all extremely friendly and very laid back. The Windhoek crowd normally spend weekends at a site know as Spreetshoogte. Camping, barbeques, flying, laughter, breathtaking scenery and fantastic sunsets are the order of the day. If you are interested in a sites guide on Paragliding and Hang Gliding in Namibia and South Africa then you can purchase a copy of Greg Hamerton's "Fresh Air Sites Guide". If you or your party intend exploring Namibia as flyers on your own then I would strongly recommend that you contact one of the local pilots for advice. The best source of information is the "Pilot Contact" section on the NAPHA (Namibian Paragliding and Hang Gliding Association) website. Here you will also find a map of flying sites. The website contains pop-ups and banners. The dunes offer relaxed soaring. Inland flying can be very strong so be careful. If you are a low air-time pilot or unsure of what to expect from the conditions in Namibia then I recommend that your first trip should be guided. |
Swakopmund as base is an ideal location to explore Namibia. Located on the Atlantic Coastline the town offers a mild climate sheltering visitors from the hot Namib desert. The town offers a multitude of quality curio and African artwork shops. Night lifer offers many restaurants, a variety of pubs, a casino and night club. Swimming pools, white sandy beaches, aquariums, golf courses, tennis and squash courts to mention but a few all await you. |

If you or your party are considering South Africa as a flying destination without contacts then you have one of three options available to you: |
Do-It-YourselfThe "Fresh Air Sites Guide" by Greg Hamerton is the definitive guide book on how to get to, who to contact and what to expect from flying all the sites in South Africa and Namibia. The guide book can be purchased over the internet. Find this guide and other publications by Greg at www.eternitypress.co.za/siteguide.htm A word of warning on this option. Flying sites in Namibia are almost all deserted during the week. It is likely that you will have to make a full site assessment yourself. Be careful, use your own judgment and do not exceed your flying envelope. |
